ALBUM REVIEW: SYLEENA JOHNSON – CHAPTER V – UNDERRATED

9 Oct

Syleena Johnson returns to her musical place and continues the pages of her story on Chapter V: Underrated. Right from the gate on on the title track “Underrated” Ms. Johnson lets the world know about her 15 year resume in the business and through much of her growing she’s still here, standing tall and underrated. Syleena is a last of a dying breed among r&b females and it shows in the lack of talent in today’s artist.

A Boss? This is when I found out she was releasing a new album. I remember seeing the video and immediately got excited. On the song she explains she’s looking for a boss; there are no easy ways to her heart unless you are CEO material. So in other words bring your A game when you step up to the plate.

Syleena slows things down a bit while still erecting a powerful message on Angry Girls feat Tweet. She explains to bitter females the importance of not passing up good guys in favor of a hurtful past. Her and Tweet compliment each other well on this. Ladies you really need to hear this.

Thorns was another song I had the pleasure of listening to before the album dropped and it took me back to when I was first introduced Syleena Johnson. When a woman’s fed up is the theme of Thorns. Insecure boys need not apply here because Syleena ain’t having it with you going through her Blackberry lol

Isn’t always The Little Things that truly matter? Syleena teams up with singer Malone on Little Things and describes a love that isn’t built on the material aspects of life. If only this were 1955 when couples actually believed in that concept. Beautiful song for the real lovers.

Elsewhere Syleena plays reversal of the dog on the song Shoes, asking her man could he accept and take the abuse if the roles were reverse? hmmmmm

I could keep going but I’ll allow you to draw your own conclusions on the rest of the album. Syleena Johnson rewards us with another jewel we can marvel and listen to. Underrated proves with no major label backing real music will still live on and stand the test of time.

In a world of Rihanna’s, Nicki’s, and Willow Smith’s there is still room for Real R&B acts.

I suggest this album so be kind, run out and pick it up today!
